Gary Drivstuen was sitting in the drive-through teller line at the bank when it all started.

He watched his deposit move through the pneumatic tube.

Zip.

It was so easy.

Later that day, the Monroe man, a local operator of convenience stores and car washes, got home and found himself stumbling, yet again, over his household’s central vacuum hose.

His wife, Sharon Drivstuen, didn’t like dragging the hose up and down the stairs. She vacuumed often and didn’t see the point of stuffing it away until she was done for the day.

That’s when Gary Drivstuen thought: “Is it possible to use the suction from the central vacuum to pull the hose back into the central vacuum pipe, just like the pneumatic tube pulls in the deposit container at the bank?”

Four years later, Drivstuen and his son, Rod, answered the question with the debut of their Hide-A-Hose Central Vacuum System.

That was in 2003.

Hide-A-Hose™ Out-of-Sight System to be distributed through BEAM Central Vacuums by Electrolux

October 6, 2010

52_low_BeamElectroBlackBlue (2)Hide-A-Hose™ announces that its innovative built-in system will now be an integrated offering through BEAM Central Vacuum Systems by Electrolux. Hide-A-Hose takes central vacuum cleaning convenience to a new level with a fully built-in system that makes carrying a traditional central vacuum hose around the house a thing of the past.

32_low_Beam_Q_PowerTeam_low“With Hide-A-Hose, cleaner, healthier living can be easier than ever before,” says Larry Hartley, vice president of sales and marketing for BEAM. “Using a BEAM Central Vacuum (with Hide-A-Hose SmartTube technology) is clinically proven to improve the indoor air quality of a home.”

Introduced at the 2010 CEDIA Expo, the entire Hide-A-Hose stores inside a SmartTube system inside an interior wall, eliminating the need for closet storage. The user simply pulls the amount of hose needed from the inlet valve, connects the cleaning wand and attachments and starts cleaning. When finished, the user detaches the wand and allows the power of the BEAM Central Vacuum System to retract the hose back into the wall. The entire hose is out of sight.

Since there is no need to store the hose in a closet, the Hide-A-Hose can be much longer – long enough to cover up to 2,300 square feet of living space. That means fewer inlet valves, simplifying installation. The system can be customized with hose lengths ranging from 20 to 60 feet and it can be installed in both new and existing homes. The system comes with a wand, a turbo brush for cleaning carpets and a full set of cleaning tools.

“We are excited to enter into a distribution agreement to make Hide-A-Hose available through the outstanding BEAM dealer network. This arrangement will assure consumers throughout the United States can have the unmatched cleaning convenience of our product,” says Rod Drivstuen, president of Hide-A-Hose, Inc.

Hide-A-Hose™ Selected for Green Builder’s 2010 Hot 50 Products

April 26, 2010

pagesHide-A-Hose, Inc. announces its inclusion on Green Builder’s prestigious Editors’ Choice: The Hot 50 Products 2010 list. Each year, Green Builder editors sift through hundreds of green products to identify the year’s most sustainable offerings. Products selected for The Hot 50 list go beyond one or two green features to exemplify the spirit of making U.S. housing more energy efficient, durable, and self sufficient. Hide-A-Hose was recognized for its SmartTube™ system technology – adding convenience by cleverly hiding a dedicated retractable hose in crawl spaces, attics, or walls. The added benefit of its “quick-and-easy” retractable hose makes Hide-A-Hose a standout among central vacuum products.

“We are proud to be one of The Top 50 green products this year,” says Rod Drivstuen, president of Hide-A-Hose. Central vacuum systems are in high demand for green builders and were recently included in the National Green Building Standard™. In addition, LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environment Design) will award points toward a green certificate to homes equipped with central vacuums that are vented outdoors. “However, the green energy-saving and cleaner air elements alone aren’t driving the growth of central vacuums,” continues Drivstuen, “It’s also the speed and convenience of the retractable hose system from Hide-A-Hose, as noted by the editors of Green Builder.”

Microsoft Word - Document1In addition to being less noisy, more powerful, efficient and durable than conventional upright and portable vacuum cleaners, central vacuums contribute to green living environments by more effectively removing indoor air pollutants and allergens. The central vacuum power unit is located outside the main living space, so particles and allergens are not released back into the air. One study shows homeowners can reduce asthma symptoms up to 60 percent by having a central vacuum system installed. The electric bill is also reduced via greater suction power, which minimizes cleaning time. Moreover, central vacuums have an average lifespan eight times that of portable vacuums, which often find their way to landfills.

Unlike traditional central vacuum systems, each Hide-A-Hose inlet has a dedicated hose stored inside the SmartTube system hidden within the walls, attic, or crawl space. This means there’s no need to lug the hose from inlet to inlet and then store it in a closet when finished. Simply pull out the amount of hose needed to begin vacuuming. When finished, the suction from the central vacuum power unit retracts the hose. Hose lengths are customized according to the size of the floor. Each inlet can cover up to 2,300 square feet.

You’re the star: Sunny days are here again!

September 16, 2009

Joyce Behrends and her husband Rick from Lake Stevens, WA have spent the last five years renovating a 1920′s bungalow. Although their home was everything they worked so hard for, something important was missing…

Hide-a-hose easily captures all that the "dog" drags in.

Hide-a-hose easily captures all that the "dog" drags in.

Billows of Dust

“Until a year ago, I closed the shades when the sun was bright,” explains Joyce. “Any time there was movement in the house, the sun streaming in the windows revealed billows of dust, dog hair, cat hair and whatever else had been tracked in. You could see it floating on the shafts of sunlight. So I would get out the broom, the vacuum and the dust cloth to clean. For HOURS. And when I was done, all that debris floating in the air would settle back down onto my freshly cleaned surfaces. Sunny days were depressing. :(

Hide-a-Hose to the rescue!

Hide-A-Hose to the Rescue

“Then we were visited by our local Hide-A-Hose installer,” Joyce continues. “He retro-fitted our home with our very own retractable central vacuum system. The first time I pulled that hose out of the wall and vacuumed, I was elated! A job that would have taken an hour, only took fifteen minutes. Once over the floors, retract the hose, put away the tools and no more dust! I don’t even mind vacuuming after work. I know that in a few minutes, I’ll be done. Then I can enjoy the sunshine!”

Thanks for sharing your story Joyce! If you have a story to share, leave a comment below!

Dealer Spotlight: Mike Sterling, owner, Central Vacs & More

July 30, 2009
Central Vacuums and More welcomes newcomers to Tennessee.

Central Vacuums and More welcomes newcomers to Tennessee.

This time we turn the spotlight on Mike Sterling, owner of Central Vacs & More in Kingston, Tennessee − Tennessee’s first Hide-A-Hose dealer! Mike has been installing central vacuums for over 25 years. Thousands and thousands of vacs later, is it any wonder his story is all about the advantages of HAH? That’s what we love about our dealers. They live and breathe it. Below, Mike has some great selling points on why HAH is a better value .

“Love the vacuum, but hate the hose?”

Mike started working with Hide-A-Hose (HAH) from the very beginning. He liked it immediately, because it addressed the major complaint he heard about central vac systems, which is: dealing with the hose. “I always got, ‘love the vacuum, but hate the hose,’” recalls Mike. “It’s easy to sell someone who has an existing central vac, because they instantly see the advantages of not having to store the hose.”

One inlet valve covers the same area as four standard hose valves!

“While the main selling point is convenience, HAH is also a great value because for every four standard hose inlet values, it takes one retractable hose inlet to cover the same area,” continues Mike. “And the installation time is much less too! What people don’t realize is that a 30-ft standard hose covers about 700 sq. ft., but with HAH, you can have up to a 60 ft. length hose that will cover up to 2,300 square feet.”

Hide-A-Hose cuts vacuuming time in half.

“The biggest advantage of the HAH retract vac system is that you can pull out the hose just once and vacuum the whole level, ” states Mike. With a standard hose vacuum, you have to go to the outlet, connect the hose, vacuum what you can reach, and then disconnect it and move to next outlet and do the same thing. HAH cuts your vacuuming time in half.”

Central vacs make a big difference.

In Mike’s words, “Central vacuums last longer than conventional vacuums; they are more powerful, more versatile, and 100 percent effective in preventing re-circulated dust in the house because it’s vented to the outside.”

Did You Know? Central Vacuums add $1,200 to $1,800 in value to your home!

July 23, 2009
Central Vacuums add value to your home.

Central Vacuums add value to your home.

Did you know a central vacuum system can add value to your home? . . . anywhere from $1,200 to $1,500 in value according to the 2008 Iowa Real Property Appraisal Manual. So what you invest in your central vacuum today, will yield returns later when you sell your home. It’s like money in an FDIC insured bank. You can’t lose!

You’ll also be in good company. Industry experts say 50 percent or more of new homes could have central vacuum systems, or be pre-plumbed for systems, by 2010 (source: Appliance Design). In addition, some of the National Association of Homebuilders’ leading green building organizations now recommend their members include central vacuum systems as standard features. NAHB’s Built Green Colorado program in Denver and EarthCraft Homes In Atlanta, award “green” certification points to builders whose homes include central vacuum systems.

When  looking to increase property value with a central vacuum system, choose Hide-A-Hose, the only system with the revolutionary retractable hose.  It’s an investment that can’t lose and one that makes life easier through convenience and efficiency.

Goodbye mud, Cheerios . . .

July 17, 2009

vacuuming-the-jeepw

You practically live in your car. And it shows, right? Mud, Cheerios . . . the carpet tells the story. And it’s not a very clean story. Ever think of using a central vacuum for the car? Your central vacuum power unit is located in the garage, so it’s easy and convenient to hit all those hard-to-reach places around the garage and nooks and crannies in the car. Hide-A-Hose’s Retractable Garage and Car Clean Kit is a favorite among homeowners to keep their car and garage from telling those dirty little stories. (By the way, those chips under the seat were from the kids, not me.)

Yuck!  That’s where your central vac comes to the rescue – cutting your cleaning time and effort with a Dust Brush tool. Open your blinds and run the dusting brush gently along the surfaces. Use the Web B Gone extension kit for blinds in high or hard to reach areas.

Hello sunshine, goodbye dirty blinds. :)

Need for speed? Do like A.J. Foyt, get a central vac.

June 30, 2009
Al Foyt, racing legend, has a new speed racer in his Hide-A-Hose vac.

A.J. Foyt, racing legend, has a new speed racer with his Hide-A-Hose vac.

There aren’t many people who haven’t heard of professional racecar driver A.J. Foyt. (Did you know he’s the only driver ever to win the Indianapolis 500, the Daytona 500, the 24 Hours of Daytona, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans? The man’s totally a legend.) So when VACUFLO® dealer King Tieken got a call from A.J. Foyt, he thought it was a prank.

Tieken, a motocross racer himself, said it was typical for his friends to call the dealership pretending to be Ricky Carmichael or Evel Knievel.

“I was at the office one afternoon when the phone rang. My secretary started laughing and said A.J. Foyt is on the phone. Then we all laughed,” said Tieken. “I picked up and it didn’t take long before I realized it was the real deal!”

Foyt wanted a central vacuum system installed in his ranch outside Houston. Tieken went out to do a walk-through of the home and ended up getting the full tour. The rest, as they say, is history.

“We just hit it off immediately,” recalled Tieken. “I guess it was that common bond that thrill seekers share. He showed me all of his NASCAR, Indianapolis and Formula One trophies, and we set up an install for a few days later.”

Naturally, Tieken was eager to do the work himself, although he ended up with a little unexpected help: “I had to run back to my truck to get something and, when I came back, I found A.J. Foyt on my ladder running pipe. I kept saying ‘A.J., let me do that.’ But he would smile and keep going.”

Only two days into the job, another opportunity emerged. Foyt asked Tieken to hop into his truck so they could take a little drive about 50 miles outside of Houston. The destination was Foyt’s racecar shop – A.J. Foyt Racing.

“We pulled up to this giant orange building with glass offices on top and these amazing vehicles down below,” said Tieken. “You could actually eat off the floor.”

Foyt said he had been thinking about getting a central vac for the space and Tieken got to work installing a commercial system to clean up carbon fiber and metal shavings. As if that wasn’t enough to cement the bond between the two men, Tieken was also asked to install a VACUFLO System for Foyt’s son, A.J. Foyt, III.

The next time Foyt and Tieken worked together was even more remarkable. Tieken installed a Hide-A-Hose system in Foyt’s 12,000-plus square foot home in the River Oaks area of Houston. Tieken explained, “The day of the demonstration, I show up and A.J. is there – along with wife, Lucy, one of his sons, a maid who’s been with the family 30 years, and several contractors. I had just started my demo of Hide-A-Hose for Lucy and the maid when Lucy said ‘Wait, A.J. has to see this.’ A.J came back and couldn’t believe his eyes. He was amazed that the system held 50 feet of hose in the wall, amazed that it retracted so easily, amazed by its power.”

Foyt's Hide-A-Hose is a clean winner!

Foyt then went off to get the plumber, the trim carpenter, and the superintendent. Before long, a small crowd had gathered and Foyt announced that his new central vacuum was the coolest amenity he’s ever had in a house.

“All this from a man with just about every high-tech gadget, and who can operate his entire house from a laptop,” Tieken added. He elaborated, “This central vacuum was something he just inherently understood. It was so useful – not just a gimmick or keeping up with the Jones’. It was mechanical and he was excited by how well it worked. Next thing you know, A.J. Foyt is happily vacuuming the living room while we all watched.”
